What is considered preventative care?

In general, preventive care is any form of medical care that has the primary goal of preventing disease, injury, or illness. As such, preventive care differs from most medical practices that focus on treating conditions or injuries after they occur or progress. With that in mind, not only can preventive care reduce your risk of injury, illness, or disease, but it can also significantly reduce health care costs by preventing or lessening your need for treatment.

What medical services are considered preventive care?

There is a broad range of medical services that are considered preventive care. Some of these examples include the following:

  • Blood pressure screening
  • Cancer screenings, for breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, and others
  • Cholesterol screening
  • Colonoscopies
  • Contraception
  • Depression screening
  • Diabetes screening
  • Hepatitis B and C screening
  • Immunizations against polio, meningitis, measles, and other infectious diseases
  • Mammograms
  • Medical advice and education concerning nutrition, smoking, alcohol consumption, sleep habits, mental health, and other topics
  • Newborn care
  • Obesity screening
  • Occupational health services, such as pre-employment exams and workplace safety
  • Physical exams, such as annual physicals, sports physicals, or school physicals
  • Preeclampsia prevention and screening, and other preventive care services for pregnant women
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing

Can I go to my primary care physician to get help with preventive care?

Your primary care physician (PCP) is an excellent medical professional to provide you with ongoing preventive medical care! Since your primary care physician will have an intimate and detailed knowledge of your personal and family medical history, current health status, lifestyle, medications you are taking, and any underlying medical conditions you have, they will have the upper hand on other doctors when it comes to providing you with high-quality preventive care. With such knowledge, your primary care physician will have a better idea of what conditions or illnesses you are at higher risk for and can provide preventive care services accordingly.

Moreover, receiving preventive care services from your primary care physician can also be more convenient for you in terms of saving time and more streamlined communication. In contrast, receiving preventive care services from an urgent care doctor will require you to go over all of the information with them that your primary care doctor already knows.

With that being said, if you do not have a primary care physician and would like to receive preventive care services, we welcome you to consider us at Primary Care 360! Our primary care physicians have plenty of experience and expertise in providing excellent preventive care services.
